romantic gesture from a very long time ago. The Hanging
Gardens of Babylon was one of the Wonders of the Ancient
World. Considered semi-legendary by modern scholars its
creation is said to have come about due to the great love the
king of Babylon had for his wife.
As one story goes King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon built
the gardens for Queen Amyris who missed the green hills and
valleys of her homeland of Media.
However, other sources have attributed the garden to an
Assyrian king in Nineveh. This is plausible as the Assyrians
had the irrigation know-how and, more importantly, we have
plenty of records of them making gardens.
In either case the garden was an impressive engineering feat.
Especially so in the case of Nineveh. It would require canals,
sluice gates, water screws, and an aqueduct to move all the
water needed for the garden. In many ways the garden would
require the most sophisticated technology of its day.
All because a king could not bear to see his Queen homesick.
Gentlemen, the bar for romantic gestures has been set!
