British MP Emma Dent Coad's Remarks: The Works of Violent Insecurity

9/28/2017

Picture"Watch. My other foot will fit too"
On Tuesday British MP Emma
Dent Coad gave a rambling
speech
to Labour Party activists
in which she attacked Prince
Harry's military service record,
Prince Philip's fidelity, and the
monarchy as an institution. Let
us take a look at what was said.

Claim #1 Prince Harry can't fly a helicopter and is unfit to
serve in the military.

Soak in the magnitude of what is being claimed here. She has
essentially claimed that the British military is unprofessional,
incompetent, and dishonest. It would have to be for both Ms.
Coad's comment to be true and for Prince Harry to have
served in the military in the capacities he did.

What is interesting is her statement that she believed her
claim was true but didn't have any proof.

Claim #2 “I am the royal family’s worst nightmare”

Ok, this is more funny due to its sheer hubris. Emma Coad,
rookie Opposition backbencher, is the Royal Family's worst
nightmare? Please, spare us. If she makes the top 100 she
should feel honoured.

Claim #3 Prince Philip has been an unfaithful husband.

Like claims that the Earth is actually flat this is one of
those untruths that just won't die. This despite pretty much
everyone denying it. Perhaps Prince Philip gave the best
defence when he was once asked about the rumours:
"Good God, woman! Have you ever stopped to think that for years I've not moved
anywhere without a policeman accompanying me? How the hell could I have got
away with anything like that?"
The Palace for its part refused to comment on the statements
by Ms. Coad. This is just as well. If the Royal Family
commented every time one of their MPs said something
stupid they would no longer be non-partisan. Plus, I think
they get what game Ms. Coad is playing. The life of a lowly
backbench MP is a boring one and not conductive to career
advancement. Saying enough inflammatory things until you
win has proved to be a viable strategy.

And I should probably also point out that the Labour Party
has pretty much disowned her comments.

Which brings us to today when Ms. Coad has stated she won't
apologize for what was obviously a joke. Never mind that she
defended the comment just the day before. But lets say Ms.
Coad is sincere (this time). What does it say about a person
when they find it humorous to tear down others? Well, for
starters it is one of the more annoying signs of entrenched
insecurity
. A quick look at her profile reveals other parts of
her life that could be feeding this sad inferiority complex.
The Royal Couple's happy marriage in comparison to Ms.
Coad's two divorces is only the most obvious example.

Because no one remembers the first rule of getting out of a
hole you dug (stop digging), Ms. Coad released another
statement suggesting that she would not apologize because
she is busy dealing with the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower
fire. It takes a certain amount of gall to hide behind families
burned out of their homes. But it is humorous that she then
remarked
"On Monday night I made a joke. It has been taken
the wrong way. Can we look at the real issues now?
" Ms.
Coad has no one else to blame for people paying attention to
this issue but herself. I suspect she would never admit that.
Picture
Meanwhile, Prince Harry is in
Toronto helping former soldiers
overcome the trauma of war
through sport, speaking to youth
about making a difference in the world, and generally
being a likable human being.

Which is more than can be said for Emma Dent Coad and her
'humour'.

Royal Anthems: He Mele Lahui Hawaii & Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī

9/27/2017

Not many people know that the
State of Hawaii was its own
independent kingdom from 1795 to
1893. During that time Hawaii used
four royal anthems.

The first anthem used was God Save the King. It served as
the kingdom's anthem from its early days until 1860. King
Kamehameha IV wished to have Hawaiian lyrics set to the
music of God Save the King. In 1860 he sponsored a contest to
find new lyrics. The winning entry was submitted by Prince
William Charles Lunalilo (who would himself be king from
1873-1874). It purportedly only took him 20 minutes. The
composition was called E Ola Ke Alii Ke Akua which roughly
translates to 'God Save the King'. The lyrics of the new royal
anthem mirrored the old one closely.

He Mele Lahui Hawaii (1866-1876)

In 1866 King Kamehameha V noted that Hawaii did not have
its own 'national air' like other nations and asked Lydia
Kamaka
ʻeha (who would later reign as Queen Liliʻuokalani
from 1891-1893) to compose a new anthem. The result was
He Mele Lahui Hawaii. The lyrics are below:

Almighty Father bend thine ear
And listen to a nation's prayer
That lowly bows before thy throne
And seeks thy fostering care
Grant your peace throughout the land
Over these sunny sea girt isles
Keep the nation's life, oh Lord,
And on our sovereign smile

Grant your peace throughout the land
Over these sunny isles
Keep the nations life, oh Lord
And upon our sovereign smile

Guard him with your tender care
Give him length of years to reign
On the throne his fathers won
Bless the nation once again
Give the king your loving grace
And with wisdom from on high
Prosperous lead his people on
As beneath your watchful eye
Grant your peace throughout the land

Bless O Lord our country's chiefs
Grant them wisdom so to live
That our people may be saved
And to You the glory give
Watch over us day by day
King and people with your love
For our hope is all in You
Bless us, You who reign above
Grant your peace throughout the land

Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī (1876-1893)

In 1876 yet another musically-inclined monarch changed the
royal anthem. King David Kalākaua wrote the lyrics while the
tune was composed by Captain Henri Berger, the king's Royal
Bandmaster. This anthem would outlive the kingdom and is
today played immediately after the US National Anthem.
The lyrics are below:

Hawaiian                                      English
Hawaiʻi ponoʻī,                                Hawaiʻi's own true son,
Nānā i kou mōʻī,                              Be loyal to your king,
Kalani aliʻi,                                        Your country's liege and lord
Ke aliʻi.                                               The chief.

Hawaiʻi ponoʻī,                                Hawaiʻi's own true sons,
Nānā i nā aliʻi,                                  Look to your chiefs,
Nā pua muli kou,                             The children after you,
Nā pōkiʻi.                                           The young.

Hawaiʻi ponoʻī,                                Hawaiʻi's own true sons,
E ka lāhui ē,                                      People of loyal heart,
ʻO kāu hana nui                               The only duty lies
E ui ē.                                                 Listen and abide.

Makua lani ē,                                    Father above us all,
Kamehameha ē,                               Kamehameha,
Na kaua e pale,                                Who guarded in the war,
Me ka ihe.                                         With his spear.

Success with Succession (Part Three)

9/5/2017

Thus far we have looked at the question of succession from
the standpoint of who (singular) gets what. But there are
many examples in history where royal inheritance was split
between several heirs. This is known as Partible Inheritance.

Partible Inheritance

Partible Inheritance was a simple concept: every eligible
(usually male) heir received an equal portion of the
inheritance. It is a system that was particularity common
among the Germanic peoples of Europe but also present
among other ethnic groups as well.

The most famous example is probably the Kingdom of the
Franks and the later Carolingian Empire. Another example is
the Holy Roman Empire, which not coincidentally has its
origins in the Carolingian Empire.
Picture
Division of the Carolingian Empire in 843
The system had several flaws which led to it being gradually
phased out as a form of succession. First and foremost it
added secure sources of men and resources to the rivalry
between siblings. Since all of the inheritors were of royal
blood it gave them all a claim to the throne.
As a result open
warfare between the inheritors was not uncommon.

Added to this was the weakening of the state with each
division. The Holy Roman Empire suffered from this as while
the imperial dignity was not divisible, most of the imperial
territories were. It came to a point where the the southern
portion of modern day Germany was home to over 200 quasi-
independent states. All of which were ill-suited to defend
against potential invasion from France.

While Partible Inheritance largely became obsolete as the
default
method of succession it was still used to deal with
unique situations as late as the 1500's. Emperor Charles V
through a quirk of Habsburg marital policies inherited the
Habsburg's Austrian lands, united crowns of Spain, and the
Burgundian Netherlands. Combined with the imperial title he
ruled a very powerful collection of territories. It turned out to
be difficult to govern however and Charles V eventually
decided to divide the territories between his two sons and
retire from political life.

The French Appanage

The move from Partible Inheritance to Primogeniture was not
generally welcomed if you were a younger son. As such
compromises were often made when the switch occurred. In
France under the Capetian Dynasty this took the form of the
Appanages. These were lesser territories given to younger
sons with legal restrictions on what could be done with them.
Appanages could not be sold or lost in any way. Once the male
line of an Appanages went extinct the lands returned to the
French Crown. It was more or less effective in allowing the
French Monarchy to maintain family peace without
weakening the realm.

But even this system did not totally prevent the younger sons
(or their successors) becoming de facto independent. The
Dukes of Burgundy were often at war with the French
Monarch. The English benefited from an alliance with
Burgundy during the One Hundred Years War.

While Partible Inheritance is no longer used by any modern
monarchy its effect on history cannot be denied.
