Royalty’s Brush with Cricket

12/5/2015

By: Mr. Windsor

Did you know Sir. John A MacDonald named cricket as the
first official sport of Canada in 1867? Or that Canada held
cricket’s oldest international fixture in 1844 against
United States where we won by 23 runs? Cricket is no longer
as popular of a sport in Canada and it has been demoted from
its position as an official sport. Despite our meager history of
cricket, the sport has a unique connection with our royal
family.

Queen Elizabeth II is a patron of the Marylebone Cricket
Club

and will occasionally be seen at the iconic Lord’s
Cricket Ground watching an English Test match. The
Marylebone Cricket Club (Or the MCC for short) founded in
1787 used to be the governing body of the laws and games of
the sport until 1993. MCC currently owns the Lord’s Cricket
ground and was granted a Royal Charter in 2012. The Duke of
Edinburgh is the only person to the president of the MCC
twice in the 20th century. Prince Andrew topped the bowling
averages in his school of Gordonstoun in 1979 and was the
second best batsman on his team. Both Prince Harry and the
Duke of Cambridge used to play cricket during school. Past
Leicestershire player Paul Nixton even described Prince Harry
as “much more in the action and could develop his bowling
into an OK seamer
”. The grandson of Queen Victoria, Prince
Christian Victor was the only member of the royal family who
managed to play first-class cricket, the most prestigious
standing in the sport. He also played for Wellington College
and soon became the captain in 1887. King George VI also
used to play “on the private ground on the slopes below
Windsor Castle, where the sons and grandsons of Edward
VII used to play regularly
” (Wisden 1953).

Many past Indian royals and nobles were especially known to
be outstanding cricket players, including Jam Saheb Shri
Ranjitsinhji, who came to rule the Indian princely state of
Nawanagar in 1903. Ironically, “Ranji” never played cricket
in India, but instead played for the English Cricket team and
scored a century (100 runs)  against the powerhouse team of
Australia in 1896. Not only is Ranji known as one of cricket’s
greatest players of all time, he also was known for
revolutionizing the sport with the perfection of leg-glance
shots when playing for Cambridge University and Sussex. The
Ranji Trophy for Indian first class cricket was named in his
honour.

Countless cricket players have even been knighted for their
knowledge and talent in the sport. Sir. Don Bradman is
regarded as the best test batsman to ever live and was
knighted in 1949. Queen Elizabeth II has knighted a few
players for their outstanding talent such as Sir Alec Victor
Bedser who was knighted in 1996. Cricket perhaps will never
be a popular sport in Canada; however, it will still be one of
the most popular sports among our royal family.

Monarchist Book Recommendation

2/13/2015

By: Mr. Windsor

It has become so cold in Edmonton that I’m debating whether it is worthwhile to go skating or not. Staying inside with a good cup of tea and a great book suddenly seems like the better option. As a matter of fact, I recently read quite an educational book that changed my perception of our Queen. I’d like to briefly talk about Her Majesty: Sixty Regal Years (Published in 2012) by Brian Hoey. Maybe after this you may decide to read this wonderful book.
Picture
The biography starts off by introducing a typical day of Queen Elizabeth II and later on describes her early life as a Princess, making sure to acknowledge her war effort during the Second World War. It describes how people had doubts about Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark who later became the Queen's husband in 1947. Afterwards, Brain Hoey comments on how the tragic events involving Diana but later writes about the engagement to Camilla and how both events greatly affected our Queen.

It mentions Her Majesty’s role in politics and remarks upon the constant relationship between her Prime Ministers and Ministers of her parliaments. However, my favorite section of the book is the chapters dedicated to talking about her duty to the Commonwealth of Nations. The chapters mentions her great admiration for the many countries involved in the Commonwealth.

Another noteworthy section in the book debunks many common myths of the “Cases against Monarchy” and talks about the cost of the monarchy in Britain including the many bonuses and benefits of having their Head of State.

So just in case the Canadian winter weather has hit your humble abode, I recommend reading a good book on our Queen.

Blog Update: Two New Contributors

1/1/2015

Happy New Year everyone,

The Maple Monarchists are pleased to welcome two new contributors to the site. First we have Kevin Gillespie who also runs his own blog (Until Philosophers are Kings...). A law student with an interest in constitutional law, Kevin brings a new perspective to the blog. A little birdy tells us he has also recently been awarded the Monarchist League's Silver Badge of Service. Congratulations, Kevin!

Our other new contributor is Mr. Windsor of Alberta. He is a member of The Young Monarchists. We look forward to seeing his contributions to this blog.

There is a tradition in some legislatures and parliaments of placing importance on the first speech delivered by a member. This is called their maiden speech. In imitation of that tradition listed below are the 'maiden articles' of each member of the Maple Monarchists.

Princess Alberta

By: Mr. Windsor

I remember I was taking the Alberta Legislature guided tour for the third time when I first got interested in the Monarchy and its effects and influences on Canadian politics. I stood beside the fountain of the rotunda looking at all the old flags mounted on the marble walls. Our tour guide talked about the massive paintings of our current and past monarchs through the centuries and how they helped carve the identity and image of the culture and traditions of Canadians today. I then realized there was a missing jewel in Canadian politics that I’d completely overlooked. Today, I would like to boast about how my province was named after a member of the Canadian Royal Family.

Princess Louise was the Duchess of Argyll and the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She was born on March 18th 1848 at Buckingham palace as Princess Louise Caroline Alberta. She would later marry John Campbell the Marquess of Lorne on March 21st 1871. The Marquess of Lorne would later become Canada’s fourth Governor General and the couple would both take a great interest in Canada. They hosted countless balls, dinners, ice skating parties and even tobogganing parties while helping encourage the arts and sciences in Canada. Louise became a patroness for various organizations including the Ladies Educational Association, Women’s Protective Immigration Society, and the Society of Decorative Arts showing how she was a strong supporter of the feminist movement. In the winter of 1880 Louise and Lorne were victims of a sleigh accident. The carriage they were riding in was overturned and both coachmen fell off. The horses then panicked and dragged the overturned cart 370 meters until they calmed down from another carriage ahead. Princess Louise was knocked unconscious and her earring got caught on the carriage walls cutting her ear lobe in half. However, the accident didn't stop the couple from being active in Canadian politics and activities. In 1881 the couple visited the North-West Territories and two years later the territory was split into four districts Assiniboia, Athabasca, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The district of Alberta was named by the Marquess of Lorne in a famous poem he wrote which compared the beauty of the district to the beauty of his wife. In 1905, Alberta would become a province. Princess Louise died on December 3rd 1939 in Kensington Palace, London. Today, countless locations and organizations have been named after the couple. Alberta’s famous Lake Louise, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Also known as Princess Louise's), 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's), The Princess Louise Fusiliers, and Mount Alberta all have been named honouring Princess Louise.
