Blog Update: New Contributor

5/17/2022

Earlier today the maiden article was posted by a new
contributor to this site. He has chosen Lord Ludichris as
his pen name and is a UK citizen. As an 'outsider looking in' it
is expected he will bring a unique perspective to articles on
the Canadian monarchy. He will also be supplying articles on
the wider Commonwealth from time to time. He has stated
an interest in possibly getting into journalism in the future
and we hope that the practice here can help him with that.

This is the first new contributor in seven years. On that note,
The Maple Monarchists turns eight this month. We will
have to rustle up some cake at some point.

Happy Victoria Day

5/24/2021

Picture
Happy Victoria Day! It is amazing how much difference a
year makes. This time last May Canada was still coming to
terms with what fighting Covid-19 would look like (even as
New Brunswick remained an island of security) and we didn't
know when things would start looking up. But now there is
light at the end of the tunnel and a hope that the events of the
past year and a half can finally be behind us. Queen Victoria
herself lived through the cholera pandemic of 1854
which she noted in her diary along with meeting Florence
Nightingale. Much like the current pandemic there was a
great deal of fear. No one knew how cholera spread and
victims would often die within days. This actually leads to an
odd connection. The doctor who figured out what was causing
London's repeated cholera outbreaks was a man by the name
of John Snow. In previous years he had used anesthesia to
help the Queen give birth to two of her children. Anesthesia
had until this point been seen as unethical to administer
during childbirth but the Queen's repeated use of it and John
Snow's research into making anesthesia safer led to it being
more widely used in the following years.

The month of May also marks seven years of The Maple
Monarchists
. The rest of this post is a bit of an update
on what I've been up to over the last year as Longtime readers
will note that I don't post as often as I once did. This largely
due to other activities taking up an ever larger portion of my
attention.

For starters, I continue to be the New Brunswick Chairman of
the Monarchist League of Canada. Recently a list of educators
in the province was compiled so that educational resources on
the monarchy can more easily be made available to classroom
teachers.

I'm also a moderator of a monarchist subreddit. While I have
been a moderator for many years now, the growth of the
subreddit over the last two years has been exponential.  It has
now surpassed 27,000 members and the moderation team
has had to step up its efforts as a result.

In a bit of news more related to this blog I have received an
offer from a French Canadian to translate some of the articles
I post. It is possible that most future articles will be bilingual.
Stay tuned for more information on this.

Blog Update: New Initiatives

5/21/2018

Happy Victoria Day everyone!

This blog is now fours years old. Some goals that this blog set
when it was first started have been reached while others could
use a renewed focus in order to achieve. But overall, it is in
good shape.

There has been a three year gap in these blog updates so it is
perhaps necessary to talk about where this blog is going in the
near future.

Hiring a summer student
One good thing to come out of the controversy surrounding
the federal government's attestation requirement for summer
job grants is that it got me thinking about the possibility of
hiring a summer writing position for the blog. Initial inquiries
have been promising and we may be able to hire a student for
the 2019 summer season.

A Kisaragi Colour is slacking off
At this point in time some may be noticing a decline in post
frequency. This is due to A Kisaragi Colour (who writes the
vast majority of posts) having thrown his hat into the ring to
win a seat in the upcoming New Brunswick provincial
election. As such there will be fewer posts until September
and potentially after.

Custom Logo
The way Weebly handles thumbnails on Facebook has never
been satisfactory. It essentially gives a choice of the pictures
in the blogs sidebar. This has led to the coat of arms of the
Monarchist League of Canada becoming this blog's de facto
thumbnail image. While a great organization, this blog would
prefer not to rely on the League for its graphics. As such an
effort will be made this summer to create a unique logo for
the blog.

Section Redesign
The Discussion Topic section never really worked as intended.
It has been redesigned and renamed the Special Projects
section. This will allow this website to better showcase its
advocacy roles.

Here is to hoping the next four years are even more successful
than the last four.

Blog Update: Two New Contributors

1/1/2015

Happy New Year everyone,

The Maple Monarchists are pleased to welcome two new contributors to the site. First we have Kevin Gillespie who also runs his own blog (Until Philosophers are Kings...). A law student with an interest in constitutional law, Kevin brings a new perspective to the blog. A little birdy tells us he has also recently been awarded the Monarchist League's Silver Badge of Service. Congratulations, Kevin!

Our other new contributor is Mr. Windsor of Alberta. He is a member of The Young Monarchists. We look forward to seeing his contributions to this blog.

There is a tradition in some legislatures and parliaments of placing importance on the first speech delivered by a member. This is called their maiden speech. In imitation of that tradition listed below are the 'maiden articles' of each member of the Maple Monarchists.

Blog Update: New Name & Contributor

6/15/2014

Greetings everyone,

Exciting news; Barry R. MacKenzie of monarchistnb is allowing his articles to be cross-posted to this blog. This will allow blog founder, A Kisaragi Colour, a chance to be lazy with posting.

...

What? It won't? Well, ok.

The blog's name has been slightly changed to reflect this as well. This does mean the old web links won't work now so here is a handy list of links (oldest to newest):

The Purpose of this Blog

Profiles of the Canadian Royal Family: Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn

Monarchist Profile: Sir David Kirke

Women & Succession to the Throne

Canada's Royal Chapels & The Mohawks

This Week in Monarchy: June 1-7th

Monarchist Profile: Michael Valpy

This Week in Monarchy: June 8-14th

A reminder that the blog is always looking for writers. Have an interest in the monarchy? Like writing? Don't want to go through the trouble of starting your own blog? Here is the perfect opportunity.

The Purpose of this Blog

5/14/2014

The Canadian Monarchy is not a terribly well understood institution. For a variety of reasons (including media indifference and hostile politicians) the good work it does is rarely recognized. So it should not be surprising that the first purpose of this blog is to educate about the monarchy both from an historical and contemporary viewpoint.

Related to this purpose is the need to confront the half-truths and outright lies spread by republicans about the monarchy. Sadly, a lie oft repeated tends to become truth. Republicans count on this. As such this blog will dissect the arguments used by republicans so that monarchists may better stand against them. An antidote for the poison if you will indulge the metaphor.

Finally, this blog is about celebrating our shared monarchy. Acknowledging its positive benefits for Canadians and reflecting on how blessed we are to have it in this world where crass politics dominate everything and everyone.

The Maple Monarchists

    About

This website is intended to be a resource for those arguing in favour of Canada's monarchy, researching Canada's royal past, or wondering what the various vice-regal representatives of the Canadian Crown are up to currently. As well, articles about other monarchies may appear from time to time.
