many including a tweet from the Prime Minister and the
House of Commons singing God Save The Queen:
royal milestone the results a new poll on the monarchy
were released. Here is the main result:
with the many previous polls. That said, the republican
movement has shown little ability to grow its base of support.
Equally predictable was the statement by Tom Freda, a noted
republican spokesman, that this poll shows that now is the
time for Parliament to look at 'severing ties with the
monarchy'. Tom Freda says this pretty much every time one
of these polls comes out. I'm pretty sure a poll could show that
Canadians are eating more carrots and Tom Freda would state
that this result shows it is time to abolish the monarchy. But
despite the republican movement's best efforts poll after poll
has stuck to the same general result: a majority (sometimes
an absolute majority) supports the monarchy.
Amid the other results (some good, some bad) there is a
birthday gift for Her Majesty. When the respondents were
asked to describe the Queen, 67% described Her Majesty as
Respected. There are not many Canadians who receive such
a glowing review from their countrymen. Even fewer keep
that respect for very long.
a resounding 84% of Canadians feel Her Majesty ‘has done a
good job in her role as monarch’. However, a slim majority
feels she should abdicate. While part of this result is likely due
to republicans it is equally true that many Canadians know
how hard she works and feel she deserves a rest. 55% of
respondents also felt Canada should continue as a monarchy.
At 90 years of age the Queen sits upon a throne that faces no
serious challenge. Long live the Queen!
