Will Canada issue a Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2022?

6/30/2021

Picture2002 Gold Jubilee Medal
The year 2022 will mark the Queen's
70th year on the throne of Canada. It
is customary for medals marking a
jubilee to be given out to deserving
Canadians during the jubilee year.
However, it was learned earlier this
year that no such medal is planned
to be issued for the Queen's Platinum
Jubilee. This is made all the more
unfortunate by the pandemic having
produced a long list of people who
are deserving of special recognition
of the type a periodic medal would
be well-suited to provide.

Timeline of Events

April 9th: Before this decision became public knowledge a
petition was already being posted on the House of Commons
website by
MP Cheryl Gallant.
April 29th: Chairman Finch of the Monarchist League of
Canada informed the membership that he has learned there
are no plans for a platinum jubilee medal. A call for a letter
writing campaign was made at this time.
May 14th: Chairman Finch posted an update noting he has
had several good conversations with various individuals, in
and out of public life.
May 19th: NDP MP Daniel Blaikie called one League
member stating he was surprised to learn no medal was being
considered and noting, "I've known many that have received
the Diamond Jubilee Medal and it was a wonderful
encouragement to them.
"
May 29th: The League released a simple infopic for posting
to social media:
Picture
June 13th: Two League members shared excepts from their
conversations with their MPs. They were MPs Nelly Shin and
Michael Chong and both expressed support for, at the very
least, a platinum jubilee medal.
June 16th: Chairman Finch provided an update on the fight.
The government was reviewing the costs associated with the
issuing of a jubilee medal. It was also revealed several
premiers had been privately advocating for the medal.
June 19th: Monarchist League details the social media reach
of a single League member. Currie Dixon, the Leader of the
Official Opposition in the Yukon Legislature thanked the
League for its efforts and informed them Motion 77, urging
the federal government to issue a platinum jubilee medal, had
been added to the order paper.
June 28th: A League member in Ontario was thanked for his
letter writing campaign which has seen hundreds of letters go
out.

And this is where the jubilee medal campaign stands today. It
is possible with MPs returning home for the summer and the
pandemic restrictions lifting it will be easier to do the sort of
in-person advocacy that greatly benefits these sorts of
endeavors.

The Platinum Jubilee Medal should also be considered for Forest Fire Fighters and support members, Covid-19 frontline & support workers, and like England, all Military, Police, Ambulance, Coast Guard with five years good service. Too many have given service to all over the last few years. Stephen Kern OStJ, CD3

100%. Too many have served and sacrificed not to be recognized. Healthcare workers and Paramedics must get priority for this medal. As too Forest Firefighters. And fully agree, Canada has never handled these medals well; England’s way with Military and Public Safety Members is spot on. Here it’s been a who’s who system.

As we are still a part of the Commonwealth and she is our Queen, it would be disrespectful not to recognize her anniversary.

Absolutely agree.

Do.not agree. They are given out By the Legions for the most part and the executive give them to themselves.

I'm a serving member of the RCMP for over 30 years. I have observed deserving members whom have gone above & beyond the requirements of their duties for over 30 years. I have observed their unselfish services & sacrifices. These members are not looking for recognition for their hard work and devotion. I say Yes to this Medal in recognition of these deserving individuals.

Any updates on this? I signed the petition before it closed, but have not heard what has come of it. I profoundly believe that now more than ever, deserving members of the public and members serving our country (in whatever capacity) should be recognized and thanked for their sacrifices made over the last 10 years.

Absolutely agree, this is an unprecedented milestone for our monarch, and the past few years have been rough; a Platinum Jubilee medal would be a great way to celebrate, recognize deserving individuals and lift spirits.

Is there any particular letter we should be sending our MP's or do we let them know personally how we feel?
I would like to be updated whenever possible.
Thank you

A great time to celebrate a new beginning following two years of COVID . Every Canadian health care worker. Every first responder including but not limited to forest fire fighters. Every Canadian and allied Veteran. Exclude politicians of all stripes.

Absolutely diabolical that this government is deliberately planning to not mark this incredible milestone with a medal. Shameful.

I strongly agree that a medal should ne issued to honour many worth canadians .Not doing so relects poorly on our heritage and the government.

I did 23 years got out on a 3b release did time overseas Rwanda 🇷🇼 Somalia 🇸🇴 Bosnia 🇧🇦 and Have PTSD I help others when they get out with their VAC claims do you think ide be entitled to one and my wife was a front line worker working keeping the goods on the shelves around the clock putting her life on the line and me praying she doesn’t get this virus and she’s still going strong

can we make sure that this time it goes to people who are deserving? not politicians giving it to each other to pat each other on the back and show off or to prisoners in jail on good behaviour?

I have volunteered with community based agencies since 1996. I was fortunate to receive the Gold and Diamond Jubilee Medal for my work. As a supporter of our Queen, I value these medals very much. Money should not be a reason why medals were not available in Canada. I and others have worked through the COVID times and the doors to the agency were not closed, outreach was not stopped. I feel it is a shame everyday people who make huge contributions to their communities are not being thought of and considered by our Government to recieve the Platinum Medal.

No better time or way to mark the occassion; by issuing the medal to all deserving Canadian such as military, police, firefighters, and covid frontline workers. Don't cheap out on this. Our grand children will never forgive you.

Needs to be addressed ASAP, as in resolved at the Parliamentary level and issued to all those Most Deserving, to include Covid First Responders, Military, Police//Firefighters, Paramedics and Nurses/Drs who have been frontline during these trying times? This is do-able. I was overseen on numerous occasion while Serving through many Jubilee eras but to those Today need to be recognized for sure. This is Not about me, its about our Heritage and future of Canada to those that Serve the Commonwealth under HRM. So Mote it Be. KN

As the president of Alberta Provincial Command of the Army Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada. I am deeply saddened at the governments decision not to issue a Platinum Jubilee Medal this to me is an insult to Canadians and to our Gracious Queen. She is our Commander in Chief of the Canadian Forces. We served for our Queen and country and our government treats jus this way - shame on these politions. Cost - they waste more money in one hour than all the medals would cost - such a lousy excuse.

Rene Duguay

I am sad to see that the medal will not be offer in some province in Canada. Only Nova scotia, Saskatchewan and Alberta will give medal for the 70th Anniversary of the Queen on the Trone. I still think that everyone should be nominated and the Lt-gov of every province should do like the other three that did announce that their province will go forward. I am in the military for over 3 decade and I still believe that we are and should be getting it like all the UK First Responders, Military, Police, Firefighters, Paramedics, Nurses, Doctors and every different government workers and member of the community that are involve with volunteering or being great citizen.

How much it cost... I am willing to give a donation to give one and to receive one for my services...

Why these honour are so crazy and not offer to everyone that want to be recognize I believe that we spend more money on other none essential stuff or do not care enough about our Heritage and History...

Agree my wife works in Walmart and never shut down at all, she worked tiredless through out this pandemic putting her life at risk with no masks to start with kept the food shelves stocked, even after all the hording and that's been a lot. These people should also be included. Big bonus at the end of ever month they worked a whopping $50 for their lives on the line. I outa k ow I did 23 years a traffic technician going all over the world for every rotten occasion 7-8 weeks at a time and not a single medal to so for it

There are many Canadians who contribute their time and talent with absolutely no recognition. Why not them?

We sit and wait, for some one to reverse the bad decision,,the goverment has made to not purchase this medal. There is no justifiable
reason, they cannot, This goverment, needs to be more aware of the value,, this would have on deserving indiviuals,, and orgaizations
